Budleigh named in the Sunday Times 'Best Places to Live Guide 2022'

Picture

Budleigh was praised as an 'unspoilt coastal hotspot' in the 2022 Sunday Times 'Best Places to Live Guide' sponsored by the Halifax.

‘Whether you’re a silver surfer or a fresh-air family you can make waves at this seaside resort’

It’s proximity to Colyton Grammar School, second in The Sunday Times Parent Power list of top secondary schools in the South West was sited as the reason for the influx of young families as well as Budleigh being popular as a retirement resort.

‘It means that you are as likely to spot paddle-boarders making the most of the low tidal range as a regiment of whiskery colonels’

Local business owner, Suzanne Stuart-Banks said she could ‘Get everything she needs in town apart from getting her shoes resoled or a key cut’, (although we used to have a cobbler in the town once). She praised the ‘beautiful golf club, the best croquet laws in Europe and a community that cherishes local life.’

The article listed the classical musical festival, which attracts international artists and encourages local talent as a highlight and also mentions the literary festival in March with Budleigh resident Hilary Mantel as its honorary president.

The listing quoted Budleigh as being the best place to live if …'you want to begin a new chapter by the sea.'

New Budleigh guide and website

Picture

The Budleigh Guide has been given a major overhaul and update featuring lots of local information and stunning pictures of the area by local photographers.

Copies are available  from the Budleigh Information Centre for a suggested donation of £1-2 to cover publishing and administration costs.

The Information Centre is a self funding Community Interest Company ( CIC) which relies on donations and revenue from ticket sales and advertising to cover its running costs.

This guide is result of a lot of hard work from volunteers in co-ordination with local specialists who provided information on the LORP and the Pebblebed Heaths, Otter Valley and the wildlife and flora to be found in the area.

The Information Centre is also excited to launch a brand new interactive website which is designed to be as much benefit to locals in addition to attracting visitors to the area. The site offers information on events, weather, tide times, clubs and societies, festivals and drama, as well as the varied leisure pursuits available and local independent businesses and attractions.

With this in mind we have re-branded the website logos and name to Love Budleigh in place of Visit Budleigh. The new website can be found at www.lovebudleigh.co.uk although the old domain name www.visitbudleigh.com  still exists and will re-direct to the new site.

Budleigh Information Centre would like to thank the Norman Family Charitable Trust, Atlas Translations, and East Devon AONB for their grant support to create this new website, which has been designed by a local web developer, Bright Blue C.

Cllr for Budleigh, Tom Wright, added: “It will be wonderful to be able to offer these bright new beach huts. After two dreadful years an omen of things to come.”

Christmas late night shopping success

Picture

There was a festive feel in Budleigh Salterton on Friday, December 10, when the town held its late-night Christmas shopping event.

Many of the traders stayed open, and there was music from a ukelele group,  Exmouth’s A Cappella singers and Chloe Aston, who plays a piano mounted on a bicycle.

Professor Bumble provided children’s entertainment, and Santa Claus walked up and down the street handing out presents.

Several outlets laid on food and drink, including Sampson’s Butchery and Deli who gave out pulled pork baps and invited donations towards the Christmas lights. Mulled wine and mince pies were available from the Tourist Information Centre.

Members of the Bicton Military Academy came along to marshal the road closures.

The chair of Budleigh Salterton Chamber of Commerce, Helen Warren, said: “I think on the whole it went very well, and some of the traders I spoke to said they had done quite well out of it too, so that’s another positive.”
