It was sponsored by Budleigh Salterton Town Council, who gave money to the Information Centre to cover the cost of hiring the tables and chairs, the entertainment and other costs.
Thanks also go to members of Budleigh Community Workshop and other helpers, who turned up to assist with setting up the table and chairs and then re-loading them on the lorry after the event .
Local traders and associations were very generous in donating vouchers for a raffle which raised over £1300. Outgoing Budleigh Mayor, Michael Hilliar, drew the first few winning tickets on the raffle . It was his last duty as Mayor .
Proceeds of the party and raffle will go towards the upkeep of Budleigh Information Centre, which is completely self funding.
The entertainment was provided by DJ Norman Saunders from the charity ‘Over and Above’. He came from Barnstaple to host the event.
Roger Bourgein, the Exmouth Town Crier, attended and made announcements up and down the street.
Fortunately, with rainy days both on the Saturday before the event and the Monday afterwards, the day of the party was warm and sunny. There were 110 tables of 6, meaning that around 660 people were able to enjoy the party. There was a conga at one point and we all sang happy birthday to a couple of guests enjoying their birthday's. We also sang God Save the King and raised a toast to His Majesty. Later on, as the tables were being cleared, the merriment continued with party goers dancing in the street.
Everyone had a great time and it was great to see all age groups in the community come together to share the event. After the success of this party and the one held last year, there are calls to make this a regular event. It does take a lot of organisation, so the team, who are all volunteers will have to get together to decide if this is possible.
