Budleigh Information Centre feature on East Devon Radio

Interview on East Devon Radio, Sunday 26th March 2023

Brenda Duplock and Gina Woodcraft were invited to talk with Howard James on East Devon Radio on Sunday 26th March 2023 about the Budleigh Information Centre (BIC).  They talked about its role in providing visitors and the local community with a wealth of information about Budleigh Salterton and the surrounding areas, and the challenges with raising the funds needed to keep it operational.  It was a relaxed and lively discussion, despite it being the 10:15 am slot, and the Sunday after losing an hour due to British Summer Time!  Gina and Brenda hope the topics they discussed helped people see the BIC from an insider’s point of view.

An important part of the discussion informed the listeners that the BIC is entirely self-funded.  Howard was surprised to hear it does not receive any funding from any organisations, and that its funds are raised solely through the hard work of its volunteers.

Brenda and Gina said, as well as the BIC being there to help visitors coming to the town, the BIC also aims to support the local community.  The friendly group of volunteers enjoy welcoming all into the centre.  They recognise that people still like to talk and are glad to provide something more than just the information that might be available online.

The centre is heavily dependent on volunteers and couldn't function without them - a huge Thank You to you all!  Gina recalled how she became a volunteer - new volunteers are always welcome, so if you are interested please call into the Centre to find out more.

Gina and Brenda mentioned the great fundraising events coming up over the next few months.  Over the April school holidays we have an Easter Treasure Hunt, and Name the Bunny.  Please support us and call into the Centre for your Treasure Hunt Question sheets and have a go at Name the Bunny.  In May we have the Coronation Street Party for the town.  A huge event where 660 people will join together in the High Street to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III.  There are only a few tables left, so get your tickets now if you want to join us for this great event.

If you would like to listen to the full interview here’s the link.  The interview with Brenda and Gina starts at 00.17 in the playback - enjoy!

Easter at the Budleigh Information Centre

Budleigh-Easter-Treasure-Hunt
The Budleigh Information Centre has some great events going on over Easter.

Easter Treasure Hunt
We have a walking Treasure Hunt available during the School Easter Holidays (from 1st to 15th April).

Call in to pick up a question sheet. It’s only £3 per family and is a great  activity for the whole family to enjoy.

Set off from the centre and follow the instructions for a pleasant walk along the seafront and around the town.

The walk take should no longer than 60 minutes and is pushchair friendly.

When you get back to the centre, show your completed answer sheets to the volunteers and you’ll be given a website link so you can check your answers.  If you don’t have online access, ask for a printed version instead.

Any children in your group can also have a free chocolate egg to thank them for taking part.

Name the Bunny
We have a beautiful hand carved Bunny newly arrived in the Centre that needs a name.  For just £1 for 2 entries, tell us your favourite names for the Bunny.

On Saturday 15th April at 3 pm we’ll draw a winner from our Easter Bonnet, and name our Bunny with the name they’ve chosen.

We can’t give you the wooden Bunny because we love it too much, but you’ll get a lovely chocolate bunny as a 'Thank You' for being the winning entry.

Many thanks to the Budleigh Salterton Community Workshop for donating the bunny.  It took many hours to hand carve and we think it looks absolutely adorable.

Activity Books
We also have some Activity books for sell at the Centre.  They have 40 pages of fun and are available for just £1.50 each – ideal to keep younger children occupied over the Easter break.  We don’t have many, so pop in and get one before they’re all gone.

The Budleigh Salterton Commemorative Boat

Budleigh-Salterton-Commemerative-Boat-Seafront

Many of us have enjoyed walking along the seafront at Budleigh Salterton and marvelled at the beautiful views of the beach and the peacefulness as we look out to sea.  The number of commemorative benches along the seafront shows it has been a favourite for many, with family and friends choosing to remember loved ones on the 113 benches between Lime Kiln car park and the Rosemullion flats.

As you walk along Marine Parade, you will pass the commemorative boat positioned on a small grassy bank not too far from the flag pole.  The story of the boat started in late 2013, when Budleigh in Bloom were approached by a Budleigh couple who wanted to remember a friend.  With memorial seats being both expensive and difficult to get, they felt it would be a good idea to have a boat on which multiple plaques could be fixed to celebrate or commemorate a loved one.  Budleigh in Bloom were pleased to pick up the gauntlet and started working on the project.  Soon a boat was donated, and with the backing and support of Natural England, East Devon District Council, and Budleigh Salterton Town Council, the boat was placed on the beach in August 2014.

It is now part of the landscape where it merges effortlessly into the timelessness of Budleigh seafront, adding colour on a cloudy day and admired by the many visitors walking along the promenade on a warm summer’s day.  Most of the current plaques remember those we have lost, but it was always the intention for the commemorative boat to have plaques to celebrate happy events too, so there are also some plaques displayed for children.  How wonderful it must be to walk your child along the seafront and stop to find their plaque, a lasting memory as they grow up.

The boat is looked after by Bob Wiltshire on behalf of Budleigh in Bloom, and the money raised goes towards the floral displays around the town, and the boat itself.  It costs £50 to display a plaque for 5 years, after which Bob will be in contact to see if you’d like to continue for another 5 years. Your plaque will be inscribed to your specifications and costs £5.

If you are interested in placing a plaque on the boat, please contact the Budleigh Information Centre and we will provide you with the necessary information.
