Storm batters beach huts at Budleigh beach
The sea was wild and the recently erected beach huts were battered by the high winds. Fortunately, most huts survived the storm without any damage, but others did not fare so well. The ones at the end nearest Limekiln carpark seemed to get the worse of the weather, with one hut ending up on its roof and two neighbouring huts blown back off their hardstanding and onto the footpath.
The majority of huts along the beach are privately owned and all are removed from the beach during the winter months to avoid storm damage. This year the council requested that all beach huts be erected between 18th and 28th March, so they had only been in place for a short time before the bad weather hit.
Hopefully the worse of the winter weather is now over, and people can start to look forward to using their huts and enjoy the summer days ahead.
If you fancy the idea of having your own beach hut at Budleigh Salterton you will need to contact EDDC who rent the sites. More details are available here – but please note that the current waiting list is 8 - 10 years long. Alternatively, EDDC provide 12 huts for short-term hire along Marine Parade. These huts can be hired for a day, weekend or week from April to mid-October. The short-term rentals are managed by Budleigh Information Centre based in the town - click here for more information and to book online.
