The Budleigh Information Centre is a self-funding, non-profit Community Interest Company (CIC) which exists to serve and promote Budleigh Salterton, its residents, visitors, businesses and community. Lower Otter Restoration Project Following the successful installation of the footbridge, work will now commence on removing a section of the existing tidal embankment adjacent to Lime Kiln Car Park. This work will be undertaken in a controlled manner (over a period of weeks) and from this point in time, the tide will enter and drain the floodplain through the gap in the embankment. The depth of water in the new habitat area will depend on the state of the tide (high or low and whether we are at springs or neaps) and the progress of the embankment removal. Footpath users please note: as previously notified, from this point onwards some footpaths may be inundated at high tide (though there will be a reduction in the duration for which paths are affected by river flooding). Signage of affected paths are already present around the site. The various footpaths around the site are at different heights relative to sea level and will not all be inundated with the same frequency. Tide timetables are available in the form of QR codes on the signs to enable walkers to plan their routes. The frequency of inundation of both the South West coast path and the riverside path to Otterton will be unchanged. The new footpath on the former tip and the footpath on South Farm Road (which used to flood most years for an extended duration) will now only flood during exceptional flood events, following raising works undertaken by the scheme. What to expect from the transition to intertidal habitat. As the site is successively inundated by waters from the Otter estuary on each high tide, silts will be deposited, and the site will begin its slow transition from low-grade agricultural land to nationally rare and much-needed intertidal habitats, including salt marsh and mudflats. This, in turn, will attract a diversity of wildlife including wintering and wading birds. This transition will take time. Initially, low-lying terrestrial grasses and plants will die back due to the increased salinity of the estuarine water entering the site. Bare areas will form providing valuable feeding habitat for wetland birds throughout the year. Over time some areas are likely to be colonised by salt-tolerant species, forming areas of saltmarsh. The new habitat will eventually look similar to those already at the estuary mouth. We are not planting in the intertidal area, as experience has shown that natural colonisation is the best way of getting the right growth in the right place. We expect change to be quite rapid over the first two years, and then more gradual as the site and wildlife become ever more natural. This is a very exciting milestone and will increasingly benefit people and wildlife in the Lower Otter Valley. The new Otter Estuary Nature Reserve car park on South Farm is now open. This is another significant step towards the completion of the Lower Otter Restoration Project. The new parking area has fantastic views over the heart of the reserve and is well connected to the most recently improved footpath network, making it a brilliant place to start your walk. A viewpoint seating area has been carefully placed to make the most of the view from the car park, the seating is still being crafted and is due to be finished soon. Parking fees apply in this car park. The car park will be managed by the Pebblebed Heaths Conservation Trust, all funds generated will be reinvested back into the management of the nature reserve, upkeep of visitor facilities, and to support our public engagement and educational work. The parking payment machine will accept cash and card or you can use the Ringo parking app. There are three blue badge bays which are free to use for those who are eligible. Newsletter posted with the permission of Kier, LORP. Carnival Club Window Display CompetitionWith carnival week now upon us, the traders were invited by the Budleigh Salterton Carnival to take part in a competition for the best dressed window.
The juding took place on Friday 22nd September at noon, with three local people taking on the difficult task of deciding which window should be crowned the winner. The windows on display were wonderful and colourful, with obviously lots of effort taken by the various traders taking part. The high standard made it a difficult choice, but after much deliberation Gilbert Stephens LLP Solicitors were proclaimed the winners of the Chris Coles Memorial Cup, which they will keep for a year. Congratulations to the team at Gilbert Stephens LLP Solicitors for coming First, and our thanks to all the other traders who took part and put on such a wonderful display. The carnival procession will be on Saturday 30th September, starting at 7.30 pm from Seachange then proceeding along Coastguard Road, Marine Parade, Fore Street, High Street, Station Road and finishing at Upper Stoneborough Lane. Come along and join in the fun! 9/23/2023 BIC volunteers visit Lee FordBIC volunteers visit Lee FordSunshine and blue skies, perfect weather for a group of BIC volunteers to visit Budleigh's Lee Ford. Our thanks to our volunteer Karen for organising this event. We had a leisurely stroll around the estate, going through the semi cultivated woodland and then down to the formal gardens. We stopped for a photo opportunity at the pretty pavilion which overlooks the beautiful formal garden and looked rather enviously at the swimming pool. Then we sniffed our way round the rose garden, with a variety of roses and on to admire the vegetables and fruit in the walled kitchen garden and herb garden. By 11.00 we were ready for our tea. As we walked round the side of the house, we saw a large conservatory overlooking the lawn and pool and thought how nice it must be to sit in there - which was exactly what we were going to do! The conservatory is full of geraniums, orange trees and bougainvillea, a very Mediterranean feel. The table was laid with bone china and our tea was poured from a huge silver teapot engraved with a picture of the house. A mini scone, luscious lemon cake and indulgent chocolate cake were all homemade and delicious. As we sat in the sun chatting and finishing the last mouthfuls of cake, we decided this was something we should do more often. A most enjoyable morning, so nice to spend social time with our colleagues. We've resolved to organise another similar get together soon - watch this space for future posts. The garden at Lee Ford is open on behalf of the National Gardens scheme and is available for group bookings through NGS Yellow book. Vintage & Classic Vehicle event at World of Country Life Exmouth.

We sell tickets for this attraction at the Budleigh Information Centre and our visit enables our team of volunteers to better advise visitors about it.
There were many animals to see and feed and goats walks were on offer. Deer, llamas, and sheep could be fed from the Deer Tractor Train. We also enjoyed a Bird of Prey Display by the Hawkridge Team - it was amazing to see these beautiful birds at such close proximity. There were other great activities on offer too, such as a giant Snakes & Ladders game, Ferret Racing, crazy golf and bottle feeding some of the baby animals. World of Country life plan special events throughout the year, with a Maize Maze in the summer and a Vintage Classic Vehicle Rally in September. There are multiple food and drink outlets across the park and opportunities to refill water bottles. We were impressed with the friendly helpful staff and the cleanliness of the facilities. The park is well designed and easy to get around for everyone with wide paths and gentle slopes. All in all, a great place to visit. There is so much for all ages to enjoy, so ideal for families with kids and for adults looking for an interesting, varied and enjoyable day out. Tickets Available at the Budleigh Information Centre. A few of the Love Budleigh team recently enjoyed a visit to Lily Farm Vineyard as part of a larger group. We received a warm welcome and enjoyed a cheese platter, including some delicious local cheeses with a pleasant view of the grapevines.
Lily Farm – the Budleigh Salterton Vineyard – as well as offering tours of the vineyard, is open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, from 10am to 4:00pm for drop in visits. Guests may choose from a menu including cheese and vineyard sharing platters, sandwiches, soft drinks, tea and coffees. More details are available on their website, where you can also book your tour of the vineyard. If preferred, you can pop into the Budleigh Information Centre where we can help to book your tour for you. Cheers! Ever fancied hiring your own beach hut for the day, weekend or week? They are located on Marine Parade, near the Jubilee Shelter, and a short walk from refreshments, toilets and the town centre. Each hut has 2 deckchairs. The larger huts are in the next block, and are on a concrete base off the pebbles and easily accessed from the footpath, so ideal for anyone with mobility issues. The event to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III was organised by the volunteers at the Budleigh Information Centre, and was held on Sunday 7th May from 12.30-5.30pm in the High Street.
It was sponsored by Budleigh Salterton Town Council, who gave money to the Information Centre to cover the cost of hiring the tables and chairs, the entertainment and other costs. Thanks also go to members of Budleigh Community Workshop and other helpers, who turned up to assist with setting up the table and chairs and then re-loading them on the lorry after the event . Local traders and associations were very generous in donating vouchers for a raffle which raised over £1300. Outgoing Budleigh Mayor, Michael Hilliar, drew the first few winning tickets on the raffle . It was his last duty as Mayor . Proceeds of the party and raffle will go towards the upkeep of Budleigh Information Centre, which is completely self funding. The entertainment was provided by DJ Norman Saunders from the charity ‘Over and Above’. He came from Barnstaple to host the event. Roger Bourgein, the Exmouth Town Crier, attended and made announcements up and down the street. Fortunately, with rainy days both on the Saturday before the event and the Monday afterwards, the day of the party was warm and sunny. There were 110 tables of 6, meaning that around 660 people were able to enjoy the party. There was a conga at one point and we all sang happy birthday to a couple of guests enjoying their birthday's. We also sang God Save the King and raised a toast to His Majesty. Later on, as the tables were being cleared, the merriment continued with party goers dancing in the street. Everyone had a great time and it was great to see all age groups in the community come together to share the event. After the success of this party and the one held last year, there are calls to make this a regular event. It does take a lot of organisation, so the team, who are all volunteers will have to get together to decide if this is possible. 4/24/2023 Coronation Street Party RaffleOn the day of the Coronation Street Party, Sunday 7th May 12.30 to 5.30 pm, we will be holding a raffle for the party-goers. Draw tickets will be available on your table for you to purchase at £1 per strip. Please ensure your name, telephone number and table number is written across each strip. Please place your purchased tickets and cash in the provided envelope, then take them to the Raffle table located in the middle of the High Street. If you would like more raffle tickets, or to pay by card, please go to the Raffle table. Our local traders have very generously donated over £1200 in Gift Vouchers as raffle prizes! Interview on East Devon Radio, Sunday 26th March 2023Brenda Duplock and Gina Woodcraft were invited to talk with Howard James on East Devon Radio on Sunday 26th March 2023 about the Budleigh Information Centre (BIC). They talked about its role in providing visitors and the local community with a wealth of information about Budleigh Salterton and the surrounding areas, and the challenges with raising the funds needed to keep it operational. It was a relaxed and lively discussion, despite it being the 10:15 am slot, and the Sunday after losing an hour due to British Summer Time! Gina and Brenda hope the topics they discussed helped people see the BIC from an insider’s point of view.
An important part of the discussion informed the listeners that the BIC is entirely self-funded. Howard was surprised to hear it does not receive any funding from any organisations, and that its funds are raised solely through the hard work of its volunteers. Brenda and Gina said, as well as the BIC being there to help visitors coming to the town, the BIC also aims to support the local community. The friendly group of volunteers enjoy welcoming all into the centre. They recognise that people still like to talk and are glad to provide something more than just the information that might be available online. The centre is heavily dependent on volunteers and couldn't function without them - a huge Thank You to you all! Gina recalled how she became a volunteer - new volunteers are always welcome, so if you are interested please call into the Centre to find out more. Gina and Brenda mentioned the great fundraising events coming up over the next few months. Over the April school holidays we have an Easter Treasure Hunt, and Name the Bunny. Please support us and call into the Centre for your Treasure Hunt Question sheets and have a go at Name the Bunny. In May we have the Coronation Street Party for the town. A huge event where 660 people will join together in the High Street to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III. There are only a few tables left, so get your tickets now if you want to join us for this great event. If you would like to listen to the full interview here’s the link. The interview with Brenda and Gina starts at 00.17 in the playback - enjoy! The Budleigh Information Centre has some great events going on over Easter.
Easter Treasure Hunt We have a walking Treasure Hunt available during the School Easter Holidays (from 1st to 15th April). Call in to pick up a question sheet. It’s only £3 per family and is a great activity for the whole family to enjoy. Set off from the centre and follow the instructions for a pleasant walk along the seafront and around the town. The walk take should no longer than 60 minutes and is pushchair friendly. When you get back to the centre, show your completed answer sheets to the volunteers and you’ll be given a website link so you can check your answers. If you don’t have online access, ask for a printed version instead. Any children in your group can also have a free chocolate egg to thank them for taking part. Name the Bunny We have a beautiful hand carved Bunny newly arrived in the Centre that needs a name. For just £1 for 2 entries, tell us your favourite names for the Bunny. On Saturday 15th April at 3 pm we’ll draw a winner from our Easter Bonnet, and name our Bunny with the name they’ve chosen. We can’t give you the wooden Bunny because we love it too much, but you’ll get a lovely chocolate bunny as a 'Thank You' for being the winning entry. Many thanks to the Budleigh Salterton Community Workshop for donating the bunny. It took many hours to hand carve and we think it looks absolutely adorable. Activity Books We also have some Activity books for sell at the Centre. They have 40 pages of fun and are available for just £1.50 each – ideal to keep younger children occupied over the Easter break. We don’t have many, so pop in and get one before they’re all gone. |
