Scam and Fraud Alert - 29 July 2024Received from Devon and Cornwall Police
We ask for residents to continue to be vigilant of the scam in which residents are contacted by unexpected telephone calls from bogus callers claiming to be a police officer, bank or fraud department, as we have received a number of recent reports in Devon & Cornwall. The fraudster may be able to confirm some basic details such as name and address and creates a sense of urgency and fear and tells the victim that their account has been subject to fraudulent activity, or similar, and will apply pressure to convince the victim to hand over their bank details, bank cards or withdraw cash, which may be then collected by a person/courier or asked to send the items to an address.

Love Budleigh News for July 2024
Gala Week 2024 - Traditional Afternoon TeaThe hall was beautifully presented with colourful tablecloths, flowers, napkins, and bunting. Each tea was displayed on a traditional three tier cake stand and consisted of sponge cake, mergingues, apricot puffs, chocolate brownies and scone with cream and jam. Sandwiches included quarters of white and brown bread filled with egg and cress, ham and lettuce, cucumber and cheese. Endless tea and coffee was served throughout the afternoon, ensuring all those present were well fed and watered!
Thanks to the volunteers of the BIC who worked so hard to bake homemade cakes and pastries, and to prepare sandwiches for the 75 people who came along to the event. There was a hive of activity behind the scenes to ensure everyone had a lovely afternoon, so it was great to get some lovely feedback from those that came along and thoroughly enjoyed the event. A raffle was held during the afternoon, offering a lovely selection of prizes, again all kindly donated by the volunteers of the Budleigh Information Centre. The Budleigh Information Centre is a self-funding Community Interest Company (CIC), fully run by volunteers to promote and support Budleigh and the local community. All funds raised from the Traditional Afternoon Tea go towards the running of the centre so we can continue to provide this vital service. If you would like to become a volunteer at the BIC, please call into the centre to find out more. Thanks to the Budleigh Salterton Lions Gala Week for allowing us to hold this event – we look forward to holding another Tea in Gala Week 2025! Love Budleigh News for May 2024 including information on Gala Week, Beach Hut Rentals and Upcoming Events to add to your Diary.
There will be musical entertainment during both days from local performers. Make sure you don’t miss East Devon Rock Choir performing on Saturday and Budleigh Salterton Male Voice Choir on Sunday.
The Scarecrow Festival wouldn’t be the same without the newly named, ‘Roger Conant Duck Race’. Be prepared to get your feet wet at 3pm as you get your duck ready to beat the best of the rest in this fierce competition to win a cash prize. And if you don’t win on Saturday, don’t worry, you’ll have another chance on Sunday! The wonderful local businesses are supporting the fundraising event and have generously provided great prizes to be won. To win a prize, head to the Raffle ticket station to be in-it-to-win-it. In particular, thanks to Gilbert Stephens Solicitors for their sponsorship of the event. Up at the church there will be a display of knitted garments being prepared to send to Moldova with the charity CR2EE. Ever wondered what the view looks like from the tallest building in East Budleigh? Well, you’re in luck. There will be a chance to go up the bell tower to admire the rolling countryside views. You can also try your hand at bell ringing on both afternoons between 2 and 4pm. There will also be a handbell demonstration and trial session. Whether you are a dog owner or just have a soft spot for those four-legged canines, come along to the Recreation Field at midday on Sunday for the East Budleigh Dog Show. You will also find an impressive display of Classic cars and rally cars in the village throughout the day. Our event will close with a Songs of Praise service in All Saints Church at 6pm on Sunday evening. We hope there will be something for everyone to enjoy – and strongly encourage you to bring cash so that you can join in all the fun! Budleigh Salterton was featured in a recent article in Devon Life magazine.
The Love Budleigh team recently enjoyed a presentation by Mark McGlade on different forms of dementia and how to support members of our community living with it. The talk was very informative for those who were just interested in knowing more, and those that have personal experiences with dementia and the challenges it brings. After the presentation we felt it was important for the information given to be more widely shared. We therefore approached Home Instead about presenting to the local community and we are very pleased that Home Instead have kindly agreed to provide a Dementia Awareness Workshop free to those wanting to know more.
Places are limited, so please contact the Budleigh Information Centre to book your seat. The Norman Centre has kindly been provided by Budleigh Salterton town council. Home Instead will also be doing more workshops later in the year, which will again be free to attend, about Scam Awareness and Later Life Nutrition. If you are interested please book your place through the Budleigh Information Centre. Storm batters beach huts at Budleigh beachA storm hit the seafront of Budleigh Salterton on Thursday 28 March, the day before Good Friday. The sea was wild and the recently erected beach huts were battered by the high winds. Fortunately, most huts survived the storm without any damage, but others did not fare so well. The ones at the end nearest Limekiln carpark seemed to get the worse of the weather, with one hut ending up on its roof and two neighbouring huts blown back off their hardstanding and onto the footpath. The majority of huts along the beach are privately owned and all are removed from the beach during the winter months to avoid storm damage. This year the council requested that all beach huts be erected between 18th and 28th March, so they had only been in place for a short time before the bad weather hit. Hopefully the worse of the winter weather is now over, and people can start to look forward to using their huts and enjoy the summer days ahead. If you fancy the idea of having your own beach hut at Budleigh Salterton you will need to contact EDDC who rent the sites. More details are available here – but please note that the current waiting list is 8 - 10 years long. Alternatively, EDDC provide 12 huts for short-term hire along Marine Parade. These huts can be hired for a day, weekend or week from April to mid-October. The short-term rentals are managed by Budleigh Information Centre based in the town - click here for more information and to book online. Love Budleigh Newsletter -April 2024.

Certificates presented to Bicton CadetsThe Budleigh Information Centre - Love Budleigh, had the privilege of visiting Bicton College to meet with the cadets of the Military and Protective Services (MaPS) Academy.
They were invited to attend the college during the cadets morning parade to present the cadets with Participation Certificates. This was in recognition of their participation at the Budleigh Late Night Shopping event on Friday 8 December 2023. The cadets marshalled each of the junctions along High Street and Fore Street to enforce the road closure and ensure the safety of the many people who attended the event. The cadets also helped with the removal of cones and signs at the end of the evening. Alan Tilbury, a director of the Budleigh Information Centre (BIC), thanked the cadets for coming along to the event. Their participation contributed to the success of the evening, and the hours they spent marshalling each junction was greatly appreciated. Sarah Coles, a volunteer at the BIC who helped to organise the Late Night Shooping event, presented the certificates to the cadets. The Military and Protective Services (MaPS) Academy prepares students for a career in the Armed Forces, Emergency and Rescue services, the fire, police, ambulance, UK Border force as well as, non-uniformed roles, civil service, voluntary or private security sector. Helping within the community is something the cadets are encouraged to get involved with. If you think they may be able to help you with an event please contact Scott Lawson at Bicton College. 1/5/2024

Beach Huts Available to Book for 2024Love Budleigh Newsletter - Special Edition - Beach Hut Bookings for 2024 - now available.
Budleigh’s Christmas Late Night Shopping event was on Friday 8th December, and what a night it was! Other than an early shower, the rain stayed away, and people poured into the town to join in the festive spirit. The town's mainly independent shops stayed open until late to welcome the crowds, and the entertainment available added to the great vibe in the High Street. Entertainment came from St Peters school children, Honiton Twirlstar Majorettes, the Exmouth Town Crier, Father and Mother Christmas, Charlotte the singer at buskers’ corner, the Exmouth Ladies Acapella Group and the East Devon Rock Choir. Team Rollocks the Atlantic rowing team bought their boat Liberty, and Exmouth Fire Station came with their fire engine before having to make a quick exit through the crowded High Street to attend an incident. Santa was in his grotto to give children a gift. Shops were decorated and open to welcome the crowds. It was a truly wonderful evening that brought the community together to shop and be merry. The Love Budleigh team at the Budleigh Information Centre organised the event with support from Shop Budleigh. Their thanks go to all the entertainers and groups who came along to make it such a special night, for Upham’s Antiques for providing Santa’s grotto and to Sampson’s butchers for sponsoring the East Devon Rock Choir. Special thanks goes to the town’s shops who stayed open and gave such a warm welcome to the all the late-night shoppers. Thank you for all the shoppers for coming along to support our lovely shops and join in the entertainment - you really did make the town sparkle with festive cheer! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all. 12/6/2023
