Blue Plaques and Cool Facts - A Walk Around Budleigh

SKU:

A short walk, visiting the town’s blue plaques and giving some cool facts about some places in the town and well-known people who have had some connection with Budleigh Salterton.

From the Information Centre…

Turn left and head towards the High Street. Take the first road on your left, Rolle Street.

Walk up the road until you reach the beach:

Steamer Steps – Cool Fact

Turn right and continue uphill until reaching the road on your right. Turn into this road and start to head downhill.

On your left is the Rosemullion Flats. Prior to the flats being built around 1990, this was the site of The Rosemullion Hotel, which was owned by Robert Lee, the father of the actress Belinda Lee.

Rosemullion Hotel: Belinda Lee – Blue Plaque

Continue down the hill. Just after Rosemullion Flats you will find on your left:

The Cliff: T N Brushfield – Blue Plaque

Opposite, on the corner of Cliff Terrace is:

Cliff House: T A Trollope – Blue Plaque

Continue down the hill and turn left into High Street. On reaching the shop ‘A Stitch in Time’, cross at the traffic lights and into Station Road opposite.

Continue along Station Road to the:

Public Hall: Colonel William Hatchard-Smith – Blue Plaque

Behind the Public Hall at the exit of the long stay car park is the brick wall on the boundary of Green Mews where you will find:

Green Mews: Margaret Joan Bannister - Blue Plaque

To your right is The Green. Walk towards the steps that lead to the top section of The Green and without ascending the steps, walk along the footpath to your right and take a seat on the first bench you find along this path.

Memorial seat: Reg Varney – Cool Fact

Sit a while and take in the lovely views of The Public Hall and The Green.

On the lower path nearest the road, read the information board to find out more about The Green and its history with the town.

On the road opposite the Public Hall is The Church on The Green. The church was started in the 19th century as a Brethren Chapel and is now affiliated with the Independent Evangelical Church.

Head back towards the town, crossing the road to walk on the pavement opposite the Public Hall.

Just past the library take the footpath on your left. At the end of the footpath, opposite you will find St Peter’s Church of England built in 1893.

Turn left and follow the road up the slight hill past the doctor’s surgery and around the corner to your right and continue along West Terrace. On reaching the crossroads, continue straight ahead into East Terrace.

At the end of East Terrace, turn left and continue up Fore Street Hill. As you round the slight bend, on your right you will find:

Simcoe House: John Graves Simcoe – Blue Plaque

A little further up the hill, again on your right, is:

Lion House: Joyce Dennys – Blue Plaque

Opposite Lion House is a small side road that leads to:

Umbrella Cottage: Dr H J Carter – Blue Plaque

Retrace your steps back to Fore Street Hill.

Continue up the hill and turn right into Madeira Walk. This path has some wonderful views across to Budleigh Beach.

Further along this path, opposite a bench, turn right and take the 19 steps down to the beach. The steps open straight onto the road so please take great care when crossing to the promenade opposite.

After crossing, turn left and walk along the promenade beside the beach to see:

The Jubilee Shelter: Built in 1974 by Budleigh Salterton Urban District Council. Later named and renovated to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 1977.

Rockfish Seafood Café:  Previously 'The Longboat Cafe', this building is the only remaining Admiralty longboat house in Britain.

If you decide to continue towards the end of the promenade, you will reach:

Limekiln car park: Lime Kiln – Blue Plaque

Turn around so you are now heading back along the promenade towards the town.

Pass by the:

Jubilee celebration stone - laid to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.

Opposite is:

Marine Court: Hilary Mantel – Cool Fact

Continue along the promenade, called Marine Parade. On reaching some fishing boats, kayaks, lobster and crab pots, maybe take a seat and rest a while.

Take in the beautiful view of the beach which has not changed for many many years.

Budleigh Beach: Princess Diana and James Hewitt - Cool Fact

At this end of Marine Parade, just beyond the boats, you’ll find:

Pebbles just before the wall: Top Gear Jeremy Clarkson – Cool Fact

Raleigh Wall: Boyhood of Raleigh – Blue Plaque

The setting for Millais’ painting ‘Boyhood of Raleigh’ in 1870.

The Octagon (house opposite Raleigh Wall) Sir John Everett Millais – Blue Plaque

Keep to the walkway between Raleigh Wall and the road (please take care of traffic) and continue towards the town.

On your right is:

The Fairlynch Museum

After Fairlynch Museum is a house called Round Corner, take the road to the side of this house and walk up the hill a little to reach Number 3, just before Popular Row.

Robert Warington FRS - Blue Plaque

Return down the hill and cross to the pavement opposite. Continue right, towards the town. Opposite is:

The Temple Methodist Church: James Lackington – Blue Plaque

Continue up the High street, crossing to the other side of the road just after the Rolle Mews car park so that you are now on the same side as Staddons garage.

A little further past the garage you will find:

Osgoods – Plaque

We hope you enjoyed your walk around Budleigh. While in the town, take a look at the wonderful array of shops and stop and enjoy a rest in one of the cafes.
