Dame Hilary Mantel - Cool Fact
Dame Hilary Mantel is a British writer who lived in Budleigh until just before her death. Hilary was born on 6 July 1952 in Derbyshire.
Her first novel Every Day Is Mother’s Day was published in 1985 and she went onto to write a further 12 novels, a selection of short stories, memoirs, and articles.
Hilary won the Booker Prize twice. In 2009 for her novel Wolf Hall, a story about Thomas Cromwell and his time in the court of King Henry VIII, and the second for its sequel Bring Up The Bodies. The third instalment of the Cromwell trilogy, The Mirror and the Light, was long listed for the prize.
Hilary lived in Budleigh Salterton in the penthouse apartment at Marine Court. She was President of the Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival and took interest in the programme and plans for each festival. She also donated the money raised from the sale of the desk on which she wrote her Cromwell trilogy, to the festival’s literacy in schools event.Â
She was due to move to Ireland but suffered a stroke before leaving Devon and died three days later at Exeter hospital on 22 September 2022 aged 70.
