Thomas Adolphus Trollope - Blue Plaque
Born in London in 1810, Thomas Trollope was an author of more than 60 books.
He first started writing before going to Oxford University, and was briefly a teacher in Birmingham at King Edward’s Grammar School.
He travelled to Italy with his mother, where they created some of the material for the 60 volumes of travel writing, history and fiction that he wrote during the 1830’s.
Trollope married his first wife in Florence, where they lived in a villa decorated with beautiful furniture, mosaic and marble floors and walls, suits of armour and a library with 5000 books. Their villa became the centre of the ex-pat society.
Thomas married his second wife, Frances Eleanor Ternan, in 1866. He continued to live in Italy, but this time in Rome, and again their home was known for its hospitality.
Thomas retired to Budleigh Salterton in 1890 and died in Bristol on 11 November 1892 at the age of 82.
