Joyce Dennys - Blue Plaque
Joyce was born in India on 14 August 1893 and lived and worked in Budleigh Salterton as a painter and writer.
Joyce was the daughter of Charles John Dennys and located to Budleigh Salterton with him when he retired. Joyce excelled at art and sport and studied at Exeter Art School, where she designed and created recruitment posters for the VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment) and Women’s Royal Naval Service.
Following World War II, Joyce moved to Australia where her drawings were frequently exhibited and published.Â
In 1921, Joyce returned to Budleigh Salterton where she continued to work as an artist, which included illustrating children’s books, the covers of Mills and Boon, and humorous sketches and strip cartoons for Harper’s Bazaar, Punch and The Sketch.
Joyce married Dr Thomas Evans in 1919, and she wrote and illustrated a trilogy of short series about the difficulties of being a doctor’s wife, and went on to write further articles and plays.
At the age of 70, Joyce took up oil painting, and painted pictures of Budleigh Salterton. Some of her work is held by the Budleigh Salterton Town Council and Fairlynch Museum.
Joyce had two children and spent the latter part of her life in Camden, London.
She died at the age of 97 on 22 February 1991.
