Almshouses to be ready in Budleigh for 2026

Budleigh Almshouses

Picture
Planning permission has been granted for three new-build almshouses in Budleigh on the site of the Gardener's Cottage next to Seachange.
The almshouses are being provided by The Shandford Trust charity through funds raised from the sale of Shandford residential home in 2022.
The aim of almshouses has remained largely unchanged since Saxon times and allow older people of limited means to remain living in their local area, thereby maintaining balanced, stable communities. This is particularly important in places like the West Country where house prices and rents have become unaffordable for so many.
The Budleigh almshouses will be ready at the start of 2026, offering affordable accommodation for older local people of limited means.  Applicants must meet specific criteria and be couples or singles living in Budleigh Salterton, East Budleigh, Otterton, Colaton Raleigh or Bicton.
More details on how to apply or support the charity will be found on the Budleigh Almshouses website.

EAST BUDLEIGH SCARECROW FESTIVAL 7TH / 8TH JUNE 2025

Scarecrow Festival Back for 2025!

Picture
The East Budleigh Scarecrow Festival is back on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th June! Come and join in the weekend of fun and games for every age.

As well as providing an imaginative display of scarecrows created by our village residents using their wit, invention and recycling skills, there are plenty of activities and refreshments
to enjoy.

The Village Hall will be at the heart of this event, where refreshments, including bacon rolls and cream teas, will be on sale between 11am and 4pm each day, along with a variety of stalls featuring local crafts and activities, cakes, pre-loved books, and plants.   Don’t miss East Devon Rock Choir and Budleigh Salterton Male Voice Choir both performing on Saturday. There will be musical entertainment on Sunday by our popular local performers.

The Scarecrow Festival would not be the same without the ‘Roger Conant Duck Race’. Be prepared to get your feet wet at 3pm as you get your duck ready to beat the best of the rest in this fierce competition from ‘East Budleigh’ to ‘Salem’ to win a cash prize. And if you don’t win on Saturday, don’t worry, there’s another chance on Sunday!

Some wonderful local businesses are supporting the fundraising event and have
generously provided great prizes to be won. To win a prize, head to the Raffle ticket station to be in-it-to-win-it. In particular, thanks to Gilbert Stephens Solicitors for their sponsorship of the festival.

Up at the church there will be a display of knitted garments being prepared to send to Moldova with the charity CR2EE. Fancy a panoramic view of the area?  Well, you’re in luck! There will be a chance to go up the All Saints bell tower to admire the rolling countryside views. You can also try your hand at bellringing on both afternoons between 2 and 4pm.

Whether you are a dog owner or just have a soft spot for those four-legged canines, come along to the Recreation Field at midday on Sunday for the East Budleigh Dog Show. You will also find an impressive display of classic cars and rally cars in the village throughout the day.

The event will close with a Songs of Praise service in All Saints Church at 6pm on Sunday evening.

There will be something for everyone to enjoy – cash is preferred so that you can join in all the fun! (£1 for car parking - follow the signs for parking at the Recreation Field).

More information about Friends of All Saints and the Scarecrow festival is available here.

Budleigh VE80 Street Party - Sunday 4th May 2025

An Afternoon of Sparkle and Fun

Picture
A great time was had by all at the VE80 Street Party held in Budleigh High Street.  The town centre came alive with more than 500 people joining in the fun, music and dancing.  Two rows of tables ran the length of the High Street from Cliff Road to Rolle Road, with many decorated with red, white and blue.

Budleigh Salterton Town Mayor, Caz Sismore-Hunt, officially opened the party and the party-goers celebrated by singing and dancing the afternoon away to fabulous vintage singer Sandy Sparkle and a wonderful selection of family favourites played by DJ Rob.

The day was organised by the Love Budleigh Team at Budleigh Information Centre.  Thank you to Budleigh Salterton Town Council and Coop Community Fund for sponsoring the event, the many traders and businesses who donated raffle prizes, and everyone who helped and contributed to make the day such a success.
